Don't spend $5-10 on a lighter with a long stem to light those candles that you just can't light with your hand. Light a raw noodle of spaghetti and use it just as you would a long match.
By the way, if you MUST have one of those long lighters, check out your local Dollar Tree. The one in my town has them all year round for .. you guessed it! only $1
