What To Buy and NOT To Buy in October

Once October is here we all fall into a shopping frenzy to get a jump start on the holidays. Just like any other month or time of year, there is a “season” to buy certain items. Take a look at this list so you know what is hot and what’s not.

What To Buy

  • Cars
    • New inventory means for reduced prices on last years models.
  • Cookware & Kitchen Items
    • The holiday sales for all of your Culinary essentials have begun!
  • Gas Grills
    • With the Summer months at a close, these items will have to make way for snow blowers and home generators.
  • Wedding Necessities
    • The popular months in which to tie the knot have passed and so have the higher rates on decor and venues!
  • Jeans
    • Grab the left over back to school sales!
  • Appliances
    • Pick up last years models for a lower price, as the newer versions have just come out.
  • Halloween Clearance at the END of October
    • Snag some terrific deals on costumes, candy and spooky decor at the end of the month. I love a costume at 75% off!
  • Electronics
    • Purchase an iPhone, tablet or iPad at better than usual prices!
  • Vacations and Cruises
    • The peak season is over! Book a wonderful vacation at a fraction of the price it would have cost you in June or July!

What NOT To Buy

  • Gift Cards
    • You will find far more offers on gift cards available closer to the holidays in November and December
  • Cold Weather Apparel
    • The steepest prices on these are in October. If you can, hold off until January.
  • Toys
    • Prices will begin to drop by the end of November.
  • HD TV’s
    • Wait until Black Friday or after, otherwise you will be angry with yourself when you see your TV go on mark down.
  • Laptops
    • You will see your best price comparisons in November.

Best Days to Get Discounts on Everything!

Mondays: Electronics
If you so happen to be in the market for a new laptop, smart phone, tablet or other device, begin your work week with some shopping. Mondays are the best day to purchase most electronics because it's the day that electronics manufacturers extend discounts and rebates. As a result, retailers may lower their prices on these items. Video games may be cheaper this day because big sales tend to be earlier to draw in more customers.

Monday is also car shopping day: Coming off of a less than impressive weekend, any sales they can get to temper their unimpressive performance are gladly taken but sometimes the opposite is true. If the dealership had a big sale and the results were impressive, they may be more likely to make the same deals to people they met over the weekend. Sort of an icing on the cake as they look at their sales numbers.

Dress pants and sunglasses: An average sale, online, of about 48% for dress pants and 55% for sunglasses, according to ShopItToMe.

Tuesdays: Airfare
Planning a trip? Tuesdays are the best days to book your flight. More specifically, Tuesday afternoons at 3 p.m. Eastern time, to be exact. That's because airlines bid for flights on Mondays and release deals starting Tuesday.
However; the Tuesday rule has limitations. If you book too late - within 14 days - or if you book too early - more than 5 months in advance - you will pay a premium. Between three and four weeks in advance of your trip is ideal for booking flights within the US.

Also, one quick tip from an expert, "make sure you clear your cookies", she advises. "Airline websites track your searches and will raise the price if they see you eager to book a certain flight." (WOW! I had no idea!! CRAZY)

...and don't forget to pick up your...
Men's apparel: 42% average discount online.

Wednesdays: Gas and Groceries & Fun
Midweek is a good time to shop for staples. Most grocery stores release new circulars on Wednesday, while still honoring last week's ad. That potential overlap of two weeks worth of sales (plus coupons!!) ensures great pricing on a wide variety of grocery items.

In addition, grocers lower prices on goods that are about to expire so you can snag some good deals to cook right away. This means that customers who shop on Wednesdays will have multiple ways to save. Your grocer may even offer double coupons on Wednesdays!!

While you're out, fill up your gas tank. Gas prices usually rise on Thursdays in anticipation of the weekends, when more people travel.
Entertainment venues like museums and amusement parks often have discounts during the middle of the week, when they're less crowded. Plus, smaller crowds are always nice. Some museums might even have free admission days, so check out the venues you're interested in for more.

...and don't forget to pick up your...
Jewelry: Apparently women tend to shop in the middle of the week, so online jewelry prices start dropping on Wednesdays and sales on accessories continue on Thursday.
Shoes and kids' clothing: 38% average discount for shoes and 40% for children's clothing online

Thursdays: Clothing
Thursdays are generally the best day to purchase clothing at a discount. Retailers begin getting ready for weekend shoppers, and organizing clothing sale racks with new markdowns. Thursday evening offers you the opportunity to scoop up the latest discounted merchandise before it gets picked through. You'll get the weekend sale prices with more, and more organized, inventory.

...and don't forget to pick up your...
Handbags: An average discount of 36% online.

Friday: Accessories
(e.g., Jewelry, Belts, Scarves): Average discount 42%

Weekends: Online Shopping, Drugstore Items and Appliances
Weekends are the best time for online shopping in general. That's "when computer algorithyms find higher traffic for online shoppers, which means that retailers are sometimes willing to lower prices to score sales."

Saturday: Books
No clear reason why. Perhaps we only think of reading when the weekend starts?

...and don't forget to pick up your...
Intimates and Outerwear: 37% and 51% average discount online, respectively.

Sundays: Specifically best for Drugstore Shopping
The weekly ads for chains like Walgreens and CVS are released on Sundays. Plus new coupons in your newspaper! visit coupon/store match up sites (www.iheartcvs.com , www.ihearttarget.com , www.iheartpublix.com) to see how you can even shop for free. Those ads often include excellent buys on household items like cleaning supplies, soaps, garbage bags, snacks, colas and cosmetics. The sale items often run out early though. Some places will do rain checks, some won't. It never hurts to ask, though!

...and don't forget to pick up your...
Swimsuits: 52% average discount online.

Weekends are also the best time to make large purchases in stores, such as appliances and furniture. You have a better chance of finding a sale.

I certainly Hope this list helps you make smarter decisions when shopping, and choosing when to shop. If you know of any other good days for certain deals, leave 'em in the comments below.
